Dr. Ed attended Notre Dame from 1962-1966 and was on the swimming team for those four years. He didn’t play rugby there but watched a few games of a new club on campus who seemed to be having so much fun. From the illustrious halls of the Fighting Irish, Ed’s education took him on to the University of California, Las Angeles.
During the first year at UCLA Medical School, a former Stanford football player in his class suggested they walk onto the campus and join the varsity rugby team. Ed then played for UCLA for those four years when they were a highly successful club winning one national championship as Dr. Ed earned four varsity letters. They played 7’s in the fall and 15’s in the winter. Occasionally, Ed played with UCLA as an intern.
